THIS is Love at first sight!
02 / 06 / 10 Biba Fibiger:
When I first laid hands on THIS and turned the cover, to open, I instantly knew that I would love THIS. And how can anyone describe this notion of a really heartfelt and poetic friendship with a book, other that: Just read it! It is not possible.

So this review has been on its way for quite some month now, also, because of the fact that, THIS, is not an ordinary book. It is a complex book that plays with your mind – in a very quiet and refined way. It is deep in a humorous and quick way.

THIS is a collection of artist writings written by several artists. Supposedly on the subject art. Artist herself, Susan Jennings wanted to collect the small and daily thoughts and conversations she so often overhears and participate in, in her own artist milieu; New York City 2009 – just because she thinks it is interesting. She then calls friends and friends of friends to ’donate’ thought-material to the book. The only criteria is that, the artists could not write about their own (art)work.

As I see it there are two ways of viewing THIS. One would be as a book on art and the other as a piece of art. And thus not an easy book to be opinionated, at all (another explanation to this late review).

If we take the first approach to read, THIS is giving an uncritical and perhaps too easy answer to where art is at this very moment (in New York). Firstly, we are not introduced to any background of the various artists, and thus not knowing how to read the statements on art that we are given.

Further, however, the artists are several in numbers, they don’t differ particularly from each other, their visual standpoint taken in consideration. Which leaves us with a very singular and one-eyed point of view into the art scene.

We have no obvious connection between the ‘authors’, other than Susan Jennings herself – (and who is she?) Reviewing the book this way would only make THIS very doubtful and dull. It would make THIS a view into Jennings personal likings on art.
So we will not read it in this way.

We have to enter the book through different canals. Broadening our minds. We should read the book as a moment; as a brief encounter with thoughts; a quick look inside intelligent minds; like a piece of art it self.

We will not care whether the artists writing THIS, are selected by nepotism by Jennings or take their adequate qualities, as the NOW-artists, in considerations. Because then I would have to review the entire art scene of New York.
We don’t know the connections and selections. And when reading the writings / statements / thoughts / poems– we also don’t care!

THIS reminds me of when I was twelve years old reading the Andy Warhol diaries. It was like being in New York, inside of a thinking head – in the present, having bizarre conversations with other underground artists (However, in contrast to Andy Warhol THIS is not boring, at all).

THIS is a blend of a conversation piece and a non-visual-catalogue on art-thoughts 2009. I am therefore looking forward to the edition anno 2010, 11, 12 etc.
THIS should be published and distributed either as underground materials hitting the streets making conversation OR published as a legal non-visual-diary-poem-magazine, and sold in stacks.

As an in-between, as it appears now, makes it dubious, and it figures as neither critical nor potential ‘underground’. As it is now it is just a friend sitting among other art ‘mags’ in the bookshelves, only differing on the non-visual expression.

But it is too important to stay that way! We want more of THIS! Please.

I will give you examples of the writings exemplifying the conversation span. There are lots more, and most of them are very interesting, funny and worth a reflection. So please read THIS:

On page 1-3 Carl D’Alvia goes: “I am for an art that…. …has a gel insert.” “…understands that someday every particle of itself will disintegrate and transform into something else, probably sooner than it thinks (one lifetime, maybe two) …has 39 Chakras….is like a baby chipmunk in your shoe.”

On page 16-22 David Byrne goes: “11.25.2007: Bubble Number One: It’s Better Because it Costs More” “ The other day I was watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade on TV with my mom and I noticed that there was a Jeff Koons bunny float/inflatable balloon in the parade!”

Pp.55-58 Burt Barr: “11 April 2003. Dear Susan, it was good seeing you last night and equally so, in speaking with you this morning. As I mentioned sometime earlier, I really didn’t think that I had (and still don’t think I have) anything for THIS." (!)

Pp 99 Lynn Stanley: “Drawings of high-breasted odalisques, museums reproductions of women whose dimpled bottoms and creases smile like friendly animal faces: the bathroom’s the place for naked girls. Here the unobserved body is emptying, emptying, while from the wall the women turn their backs.”

Pp. 81-97 Craig Kalpakjian: “Leon Theremin was a 20th-century inventor who was extraordinary attuned to the waves that surrounded us, both sonic and electric. He was able to do spectacular things with invisible potentials……..”
